Springfield, Rockingham area youth place in 4-H Shooting Sports Jamboree

JOHNSBURY — Vermont 4-H club members had the opportunity to compete for medals in six separate shooting sports disciplines at the 2017 4-H Shooting Sports Jamboree. Winners included youths from Springfield and the Rockingham area.

The July 21-23 competition, sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H, took place at the Caledonia Forest and Stream Club in St. Johnsbury. Host clubs were the Caledonia Sharp Shooters 4-H Club, St. Johnsbury; Green Mountain 4-H Shooting Sports Club, Lyndonville; and the Upper Valley Bullseyes 4-H Club, Bradford.

The 4-H'ers worked with certified instructors on Friday to hone their skills before competing in archery, pistol, rifle, Seneca Run (muzzleloader, hawk and knife throw, instinctive bow, fire starting), shotgun and a hunting/wildlife contest on Saturday. The latter involved hunter safety, a timed compass course and identification of animal furs, feathers, skulls, tracks and scat.

The 4-H'ers competed by age group with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to the top scorers in each discipline. The three highest overall scorers in each age division also earned medals.

The results of the competition, in order of placement, were as follows:

Overall High Scorers:

Senior (14-18): Nigel Waring, Kirby; Ken Beaupre, Orford, New Hampshire; Jonathan Churchill, Groton. Honorable Mention: Tyler Decker, Lake George, New York

Junior (11-13): Jacob Churchill, Groton; Colby Butler, Dorset; Taylor Tetreault, Groton. Honorable Mention (tie): Joseph Connor, Orwell, and Luke McReynolds, North Danville
