Elementary school awarded grant to improve landscaping

CAVENDISH — The Vermont Community Fund has awarded a $1,000 grant through its Small and Inspiring Grant program to the Two Rivers Supervisory Union for further landscaping of the lot next to the Cavendish Town Elementary School.

The purpose of the award is to support work that builds communities. Elementary school principal George Thomson has taken the lead, working with a committee including school board member, town select board member and a local landscape architect, Tim Calabrese, ASLA, according to a Cavendish newsletter.

To date, the town highway department has contributed equipment and labor, and dozens of local gardeners have worked to make the streetscape beautiful.

The project will provide summer part-time supervised landscaping work for young women who are residents of the Windsor County Youth Services House, using community members working with them as positive role models. It will also provide expanded learning experiences for elementary school children, while addressing the needs of young women moving from adolescence to adulthood with significant challenges that grow out of childhood trauma.

VCF provides grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 through a grassroots model that puts building and nurturing community front and center in grantmaking, with an aim to support the work happening in 250 Vermont towns that builds social capital. For more information, visit www.vermontcf.org.
