Area 4-H club members compete in dairy judging tour

Twenty-two competitors, ages 8 to 18, hailed from six clubs in Orange, Washington, Windham and Windsor Counties, including from Springfield. They traveled to Harkdale Farm in Newbury in the morning to judge three classes of Jerseys and to the Tullando Farm in Orford, New Hampshire, after lunch to judge three classes of Holsteins.

In addition to placing the animals in each class, the seniors, ages 14 to 18, were required to present oral reasons for their placements. Juniors, ages 11-13, while not required to give reasons, were encouraged to do so for the practice.

Placements, listed from first to last in each age division, were as follows:

Seniors: Morgan Conant, Randolph Center; Emily Deome, Randolph Center; Tyler Slack, Bethel; Gabe Howe, Tunbridge; Leah Titus, Reading

Juniors: Keenan Thygesen, Tunbridge; Dylan Slack, Bethel; Sophie Martin, Springfield; Abby Carson, Newbury; Hannah Dolloff, Springfield; Julia Howe, Tunbridge; Caleb Palazzo, Pomfret; Hayden Howe, South Royalton; Brennan Vaughan, East Thetford

Rookies (ages 11-13, first-time dairy judging participants): Juliet Allen and Maxine Savard, both from Montpelier, in a tie for first place

Beginners (ages 8-10): John Lincoln, Randolph Center

Novices (ages 8-10, first-time dairy judging participants): Elizabeth Waterman, Thetford Center; Dani Flint, Randolph; Haley Dow, West Hartford; Dominic Palazzo, Pomfret
